The translators of the Old Testament used the Masoretic Text of the Hebrew Bible as their standard text. They used the edition known as Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (1977), with its up-to-date textual apparatus that compares the Dead Sea Scrolls, The Septuagint, and other Greek manuscripts.
Enter the NT:
The translators of the New Testament used the two standard editions of the Greek New Testament. The Greek New Testament, published by United Bible Societies, and Novum Testamentum Graece, edited by Nestle and Aland. These two editions that differ in punctuation and textual notes, represent the best in textual scholarship on the New Testament. The translators of the deuterocanonical books used as their standard text the Greek version known as Septuaginta, complied by Alfred Rahlfs.
The translators of the New Living Translation sought to use vocabulary and language structures in common use today even as they avoided using words likely to become quickly dated or language that reflects only a narrow sub-dialect of English. The goal was to make the NLT not only easy to understand, but also to ingrain it with emotive power immediately impacting receptors, speaking directly to their hearts and minds.
